CHAPTER SUMMARY:
Alpha Phi began at Syracuse University in 1872 by the first women to enter that university. They found that the men enjoyed camaraderie and friendships as members of all-male fraternities, and they also wanted that feeling of belonging and support. To meet that need, they founded Alpha Phi and dreamt from the beginning to be an organization that called many campuses home to innovators like themselves. Today, Alpha Phi calls 143 institutions across North America home.
Our members today continue to be innovators through their academics, involvement on campus and contributions to their communities. Alpha Phi is rooted in the ideals of sisterhood, scholarship and service. These three virtues bind us together to improve ourselves and those around us.
The flowers of Alpha Phi are the fragrant lily of the valley and the blue and gold forget-me-not. The ivy leaf is also a symbol. The mascot of Alpha Phi, the “Phi Bear,” is named after Ursa Major, the Great Bear. Alpha Phi’s colors are silver and Bordeaux. The public motto is “Union hand in hand”.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:
The bonds of friendship tie each of our members together during college and post-graduate years. It is the friendships formed that lead to smiles, laughter, tears and ultimately memories Alpha Phis will cherish for a lifetime. In Alpha Phi, it is the individual that makes the difference in the experience – and a collection of brilliant individuals leads to the experience of a lifetime.
