CHAPTER SUMMARY:
Our chapter is home to 96 well-rounded women who are involved in any number of activities. These women include participants of intramural soccer, softball and basketball (making it to the championships 2 semesters in a row!), Alumni Scholarship winners, women studying abroad, campus tour guides, members of pre-law and pre-med fraternities, jazz musicians, members of Order of Omega, research assistants, ASUC Directors and interns, athletes, DeCal leaders, and more. While we have varied individual pursuits and interests, we remain united under our common values and experiences in our Fraternity. Our chapter is also involved in many philanthropic pursuits. Last year we raised over 4,000 dollars for Relay for Life (the highest raising team!), this year we received second place in Sigma Chi’s Derby Days fundraiser, and we play an active role in many other philanthropies both inside and outside the Greek community.
I encourage you to contact us and check out our website for more information on all the great things that AOII’s are doing on campus and the community at large!
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:
AOII is a family to me and like with any family, there is a broad spectrum of interests and activities but we are united through a common bond. I am proud to call these women my sisters and be part of an organization that is so active in every facet of college life. Our mission statement says it all, “Women enriched through lifelong friendship”.

CHAPTER HISTORY:
Founded on January 2, 1897 at Barnard College, Alpha Omicron Pi began as a dream by 4 young college women to continue their friendship throughout life. Barnard College, in the late 1890’s, was the first separate college for women to be affiliated with a great men’s university such as Columbia University. One of AOII’s founders, Stella George Stern Perry, wrote in 1936, “We wanted a fraternity that should carry on the delightful fellowships and cooperation of college days into the workday years ahead and to do so magnanimously. Above all, we wanted a high and active special purpose to justify existence and a simple devotion to some worthy end.”
Founded on the UC Berkeley Campus in 1907, Sigma Chapter was the first AOII to be chartered on the West Coast. Home to nearly 100 women, our beautiful historic house is located at 2311 Prospect, next to Memorial Stadium and within walking distance of Strawberry Canyon. Moving to its third chapter house in the 1920’s, the architect of our current location was Stafford Lelean Jory, a professor of architecture at UC Berkeley who married one of his former classmates, Grace Weeks, an AOII. Being one of the first houses to be built specifically for a sorority, this house is unique in that it has a similar style to the historic buildings on campus. Stafford Jory in fact had a considerable hand in helping John Galen Howard design some of the most famous buildings on Berkeley’s campus: Wheeler Hall, Hilgard Hall, Doe Library, Edwards Field Track Stadium, and was largely responsible for much of the design in the present Boalt School of Law built in 1950. Jory's hand in the design of our house is very special to us as he was married to an AOΠ. Her input to the design, as she was a former architecture student, can be seen throughout the house. The archways in the foyer form the letters, AOΠ, with one arch ascending to an apex (alpha), the next arch being rounded (omicron), and the pi is formed by wood-framed windows. Contributing two international AOII Presidents (from 1915-1919, and 1927-1929) and an AOII magazine editor, Sigma chapter prides itself in having such a lasting legacy on the fraternity.
AOII is excited to be a part of the Greek community for 100 years at Berkeley and to celebrate it with fellow Greeks, professors, campus leaders and over 300 alumnae!
