Additional Information

Chapter Summary/Information: Phi Delta Theta was organized with three principle objectives: The cultivation of friendship among its members, the acquirement individually of a high degree of mental culture, and the attainment personally of a high standard of morality. The Fraternity teaches men that these areas of commitment, outlined in The Bond of Phi Delta Theta, are not to be viewed as separate ideals, but as areas of discipline for daily life. Developments intellectually, in leadership, and human service (to name a few) are vital to the men of Phi Delta Theta. A member will support, and in turn have the support of, his brothers as these principles are lived out.

Message from the President: For years, the California Alpha chapter of Phi Delta Theta has been dedicated to embodying the ideals upon which we were founded and has steadily grown into a well respected, recognized fraternity. The chapter represents a strong social organization that rests heavily on the commitment and character of its members. We are a group of unique individuals who share a common friendship and are tied together by an unbreakable sense of brotherhood. We rely on each other and continuously work hard to make our organization even better. Phi Delta Theta is truly an asset to any undergraduate college experience and our awesome alumni network makes your membership invaluable for many years down the road.

Chapter History: Since established at Berkeley in 1873, California Alpha has had a vibrant history. One of the first brothers of Cal Alpha was a man named Jacob Bert Reinstein, the 8th member of our chapter. He was one of the “Twelve Apostles” at Berkeley, which was the first four-year class at the university and graduated in 1873. Mr. Reinstein went on to be the first Cal Alumnus to be appointed to the U.C. Regents Board. In 1902, Cal Alpha moved to its first chapter house at 2401 Durant Avenue near Dana, the very first fraternity-owned house in American history. When the brothers moved into the new house there was a man named John Reid Jr. (#126) who later went on to become a well known architect in the area. He also designed what is now the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, along with several other buildings in the area. Later in his career he designed what is now known as the Hearst Mansion for Phi Delta Theta, which still resides on Hearst Avenue on the north side of campus. In 1948, the university faced a great housing shortage. Their proposed solution was to demolish many buildings, such as Phi Delt’s house on Hearst and Beta Theta Pi’s house, in order to build more dorms. This plan ultimately failed, but the 1960’s anti-Greek sentiment soon to follow led to the university forcing fraternities and sororities to move to the south side of campus. Today, the Hearst House is designated as a “City of Berkeley Landmark” and has been since May 24, 1982.
