Chapter Summary/Information: Lambda Theta Phi provides the Latino college student the opportunity to be part of a family with a mission. What is this mission? To cultivate a spirit of brotherhood, to value an education, to promote unity among all Latinos, to be proud of and cherish our heritage, to assert roles of leadership, to develop character, to practice chivalry, and to serve mankind. In short, to raise the social and cultural conscience of the Latin male college student. The Beta Chi Chapter of Lambda Theta Phi, Latin Fraternity Inc. is also known as the “Institution of Evolution.” This name symbolizes the evolution of the fraternity to establish itself in the West Coast in Northern California, but also to symbolize a brotherhood created by the evolution of the Latino male college student into a brother of Lambda Theta Phi.

Message from the President: Lambda Theta Phi was born to promote the spirit of brotherhood, to protect the rights of Latino students in his/her quest for an education, to promote the rich Latino culture, and to maximize leadership potentials to provide guidance to our community. Membership at the undergraduate level is open to all males, regardless of race, culture or creed. The prospective student must be enrolled full-time at a four-year accredited institution. In addition, in order to participate in the fraternity’s intake process, the student must possess a minimum of 2.5 grade point average. Lambda Theta Phi seeks visionary leaders who can assist in our mission to accomplish the goals set forth by our founders. Lambda strives to recruit individuals with a commitment to excellence and a determination to succeed. -Rodrigo Castillo President Lambda Theta Phi, Latin Fraternity, Inc. - Beta Chi Chapter

Chapter Philanthropy: East Bay Sanctuary Covenant offers sanctuary, solidarity, support, community organizing assistance, advocacy, and legal services to those escaping war, terror, political persecution, intolerance, exploitation, and other expressions of violence. We intentionally provide opportunities for transformational learning that arise from the relationships we fosters among refugees, immigrants, and host communities. We join with others to understand and eliminate the causes of violence and oppression worldwide. EBSC was formed in 1982, when East Bay congregations united in a covenant to provide sanctuary to Central American asylum seekers.

Chapter History: On December 1, 1975, history was made – history on a college campus, which would transcend other colleges/universities throughout the United States; history which would have a positive impact on the Latino community and our nation; history which would forever change the Greek system, more specifically, the entity known as a fraternity. On December 1, 1975, Lambda Theta Phi was founded on the campus of Kean College in Union, New Jersey becoming the Nation’s first Latino based fraternity. The University of California, Berkeley saw the next emerging chapter of Lambda Theta Phi, Latin Fraternity, Inc. in the spring semester of 2004. Luis Sanchez, Renato Manay, Renzo Manay, Arquimides Pacheco, and Rafael Hernandez Perez created a historical landmark; they had managed to establish the first Latino Greek Letter Fraternity officially recognized by the National Interfraternal Council (NIC) at the UC Berkeley campus. As the newly established chapter of Lambda Theta Phi entered the Fall of 2004, these five sought to apply their desire to show what a Latino Fraternity can do (and must do) for the Latino and the campus community as a whole, while overcoming all stereotypes commonly embedded in most fraternities. These ideals led to the further interest of Lambda Theta Phi to new and continuing male students on this campus. Since then, five more lines of Conquistadores have crossed, the most current being Zeta Line in the Spring of 2009, leading to a strong brotherhood of Lambda Theta Phi at UC Berkeley. Now, since its establishment and through its further development and growth, the Beta Chi chapter of Lambda Theta Phi has continued to uphold its ideals of a service/social fraternity by giving back to the community while engaging in social activities that would allow stronger ties among our members and with other organizations. Such include our participation in the Annual AIDS Walk, our service in low-income Oakland Elementary schools, advocacy of immigrant rights to day laborers within the county of Alameda, our service with Hands on Bay Area, and aid to refugees with the East Bay Sanctuary. Apart from these community service events, this chapter has sought to create strong ties and mutual respect with other Latin and non-Latin organizations through social activities and collaborative efforts. We will continue to work for Latino unity and the promotion and evolution of the Latino male college Student through our service and leadership on campus.
