Additional Information

Chapter Summary/Information: Alpha Omicron Pi is an international women's fraternity promoting friendship for a lifetime, inspiring academic excellence and lifelong learning, and developing leadership skills through service to the fraternity and community. Our chapter is home to over 100 women who are involved in numerous activities and organizations. Some of our women are involved in activities including intramural soccer, softball and basketball, studying abroad, members of pre-law and pre-med fraternities, Order of Omega Honor Society, research assistants, ASUC Directors and interns, Varsity athletes and managers, DeCal leaders, and more. While we have varied individual pursuits and interests, we remain united under our common values and experiences of our Sorority. Our chapter is also involved in many philanthropic pursuits. Last year we raised over $4,000 for Relay for Life (the highest fund raising team on campus!), earned second place in Sigma Chi’s Derby Days Philanthropy, and regularly play an active role in many other philanthropies both inside and outside the Greek community.

Message from the President: Welcome to UC Berkeley and the Cal Greek community! As a member of Alpha Omicron Pi, I have enjoyed the most extraordinary college experience one could expect. I have gained true friends for a lifetime and created memories that will last forever. I have strongly connected with the Cal community and AOII, which are truly my home, pride and joy. Some of the core values of my sorority, building lifelong friendships, promoting integrity, developing leaders, striving for excellence, encouraging innovation and creativity, and being a living example, have helped guide my life and college years to be successful, rewarding and satisfying. As the leader of a house with diverse interests and activities, I am at home and proud of all of my sister’s accomplishments, aspirations, and futures.

Annual Events: AOII Events: Alumni BBQ, Parents Events (Mother’s Tea, Father/Daughter Rugby Game), Football Game days, Presents for New Members, Inspiration Week, Professor's Dinner (twice a year), “Strike a Move" to Strike out Arthritis, Sisterhood Overnight Retreats, Founder’s Day, Invitational’s, Date parties, and Exchanges (Social events). Philanthropy: Arthritis Walk, Relay for Life, Breast Cancer Walk, AIDS Walk, Sigma Chi Derby Days (2nd), Chi-o Casino (1st Place Attendance), ADPi’s Foosball Tournament (1st Place Attendance), PiPhi Arrowbands.

Chapter Philanthropy: Alpha Omicron Pi’s International Philanthropy supports Arthritis, Juvenile Arthritis and related diseases. Since 1967 when we adopted the Arthritis Foundation and Canadian Arthritis Society as our international philanthropy, over $1 million have been raised by AOIIs to help researchers find a cure for this crippling disease. Chapters also donate countless hours to numerous local community projects that benefit children, the elderly, and those in need. Our annual philanthropy event, AOII’s “Strike-a-Move”, is a talent-show event, in which numerous fraternities, sororities and organizations showcase choreographed dances and other talents. Our Fall 2008 Strike-A-Move Event had over 300 people in attendance and helped us to raise over $2500.

Chapter History: Founded on January 2, 1897 at Barnard College in New York, Alpha Omicron Pi began as a dream by 4 young college women to continue their friendship throughout life. Founded on the UC Berkeley Campus in 1907, Sigma Chapter was the first AOII to be chartered on the West Coast. Home to over 100 women, our beautiful historic house is located at 2311 Prospect, near Memorial Stadium and within walking distance of Strawberry Canyon. The architect of our house, Stafford Lelean Jory, was a professor of architecture at UC Berkeley who married one of his former classmates, Grace Weeks, an AOII. Being one of the first houses to be built specifically for a sorority, this house is unique in that it has a similar style to the historic buildings on campus. Stafford Jory in fact had a considerable hand in helping design some of the most famous buildings on Berkeley’s campus: Wheeler Hall, Hilgard Hall, Doe Library, Edwards Field Track Stadium, and was largely responsible for much of the design in the present Boalt School of Law built in 1950. Jory's design of our house is very special to us as he was married to an AOΠ. Her input in the design can be seen throughout the house, such as the archways in the foyer, which form the letters, AOΠ. With a phenomenal view of the San Francisco Bay and Golden Gate Bridge, our “Million Dollar” view is an extraordinary treat at sunset. In 2007, our chapter celebrated our 100th Anniversary on the UC Berkeley campus, hosting hundreds of guests and numerous events as part of our commemorative Centennial Celebration.
