Chapter Summary/Information: Alpha Delta Pi was founded May 15, 1851 at Wesleyan Female College in Macon, Georgia, and holds the distinction of being the first secret society for women and the mother of today's sorority system. We were founded on the principles of scholarship, leadership, sisterhood, and service, which continue to guide over 215,000 women in more than 134 active collegiate chapters and over 150 alumnae associations of Alpha Delta Pi. Psi chapter of Alpha Delta Pi is composed of over 100 bright, well-rounded young women, all of whom are active both in the chapter and with various campus organizations. We have members of the ASUC, professional fraternities, the Daily Cal, Student Advocate’s Office, and much more. Scholarship is an integral part of Psi chapter as we have many members of Order of Omega, a Greek Honors Society, continually maintain a higher average GPA than the all women's average at Berkeley. ADPi has a strong commitment to philanthropy and contributes to the Ronald McDonald House through our spring philanthropic event, a foosball tournament, as well as visits to Ronald McDonald Houses in the Bay Area. ADPi also has show strong support for Greek events, having the greatest attendance at Panhellenic events like Cal Greeks Warriors Night and Think Pink. We are a very well-balanced chapter, and actively support each other with our individual interests and achievements, all while still upholding the founding principles of Alpha Delta Pi.
Message from the President: Alpha Delta Pi has become a place to develop and flourish as an individual, a scholar, and a professional, and is a place that brings out the best in all our women. We demonstrate strong individual scholastic and professional achievements, but we never forget that sisterhood has the strongest influence on the unity of our chapter. Our women get together to go to Cal sporting events, watch our favorite TV shows, go out to dinner and a movie, participate in study hours, intramural sports, Greek events, and perform community service. Sisterhood has allowed us to develop lasting friendships, and have contributed to strong ties between all classes in the chapter. Our women show a passionate energy and strong commitment to their wide array of interests, hobbies, and subjects they are studying here at UC Berkeley. This enthusiasm and dedication is palpable in the chapter and always succeeds in motivating everyone to live up to our highest potential. It is rare to find an opportunity to live and develop in an environment where your friends and sisters motivate you to be the best that you can be, encourage you to try new things, and show complete support in all your endeavors. Once joining Alpha Delta Pi, our women are provided with opportunity and guidance to become better students, better citizens, and most importantly, better friends.
Annual Events: Bid Day, Presents (Brunch for the newest alpha class and their families), Scholarship/Professors' Dinner , Invitationals, Date Parties, Fall Homecoming Weekend Brunch, Fall Parents’ Weekend, Spring Philanthropy "Diamond Cup" Soccer Tournament, Spring Founder's Day Brunch (celebrating ADPi’s founding), and various sisterhood events throughout the year.
Chapter Philanthropy: Alpha Delta Pi’s national philanthropy is the Ronald MacDonald House Charities, which serves to create, find and support programs that directly improve the health and well being of children who are in hospitals and their families. The Ronald MacDonald House addresses a variety of problems including ways to stay near and support a hospitalized child, how to afford staying together in another city while a child is undergoing treatment, or even getting basic medical and dental care in an underserved community. They strive to be a part of that change and part of the solution in improving the lives of children and their families.
Chapter History: In 1910, an advertisement appeared in Berkeley's beloved Daily Californian campus newspaper, which offered a $1,000 stipend for the establishment of a house club by any group of students. A group called the Carnarvon Club organized, rented and furnished a house and chose a Welsh harp as their insignia. Fortuitously, it caught the eye of Lily Cliberon, who would rally the enthusiasm of her friends to organize themselves into what would soon become Psi Chapter of Alpha Delta Pi. This twenty-third national chapter was formally chartered on December 6, 1913, and, on this day, Abigail Davis initiated the first twenty-nine members of Psi. The 1915 Alpha Delta Pi Convention was held in Berkeley. Psi chapter occupied several houses until 1931 when our chapter purchased 2400 Piedmont Avenue, the summer home of notable Bay Area heiress Phoebe Hearst, for only $28,000. The house was recognized immediately as the showplace of the campus. Since then, the former bungalow-style mansion has had its ballroom and squash court converted into bedrooms and several modern conveniences added on, but it still retains its original character, and is a charming home to sixty girls at its capacity. With its location on Channing circle, Psi chapter of Alpha Delta Pi lies at the very heart of the present-day Greek community.
