Chapter Summary/Information: We are a social fraternity located at 2340 Piedmont Avenue, right in the middle of Greek row. Our motto is Human Service, and we value leadership, initiative, accountability and ambition. Acacia stands for the ideals of brotherhood, the search for truth, the love of wisdom and human service. We have 21 members which allows for a close-knit brotherhood that is difficult to find and let's our members make Cal smaller for themselves.
Message from the President: Acacia is the most complete fraternity you will find at Berkeley. By emphasizing brotherhood, we strengthen each other socially, academically, physically, and philosophically. Our motto, Human Service, encourages us to positively impact our community. We pride ourselves on being a place that fosters a welcoming and fun environment seven days a week as a recess from the rigors of college life. While we participate philanthropically in many ways, our marquee event, Acacia Claus, raised hundreds of toys for underprivileged children last year. We have brothers who are or have been involved in Cal Football, Cal Hockey, Order of Omega and Cal Orchestra. Many of our members participate in academic honor societies, including Golden Key and National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Music and sports are two themes that run constant in our fraternity, with many brothers who love to jam and have their own bands in addition to heavy involvement in IM football, soccer, basketball and frisbee. As students at Cal, academics are a top priority. Acacia provides a vast array of academic and career resources, with many brothers in the Hass School of Business, College of Engineering, and pursuing degrees in pre-med fields. Our Cornerstones program and wide bay-area alumni base offers contact with alumni for internships and career opportunities. Additionally, the Acacia Fraternity Foundation has awarded over $200,000 in academic scholarships to Acacia brothers, severely lessening the financial burden of college for excelling brothers. Acacia hosts a wide-range of social events, such as exchanges with sororities, camping retreats, snowboarding trips, house sporting events, front deck BBQs and bonfires, parties, Winnebago trips, and more. Above all, however, at Acacia we have all come to realize that it’s the personal relationships, interactions and experiences that you share with others which truly add depth and meaning to a college experience and life in general. We encourage all to come form the friendships, face the challenges and create the memories that the brothers of Acacia have all had the privilege of experiencing.
Annual Events: Acacia Claus -- Our annual toy drive every fall Acacia Clothes -- A clothing drive in the spring newly adopted as a compliment to our successful and fulfilling Acacia Claus Night on the Nile – Our largest event of the year Black and Gold – Our formal event, usually held on a boat in the San Francisco Bay
Chapter Philanthropy: The motto of the Acacia Fraternity is “Human Service,” so naturally our chapter takes pride in its efforts to help the community and improve the image of fraternities as a whole. Some of our events include: • Acacia Claus: We hold an annual toy drive during the holidays, pairing up with local toy stores and sororities on campus. At the end of the month-long event, we bring all the toys to the salvation army and distribute them to needy children. • Providing volunteers for Habitat for Humanity • Participation in the campus clean up days • Staffing the annual Easter Egg hunt • Sorting food at the Alameda County Food Bank
Chapter History: The California Chapter of the Acacia Fraternity was chartered on April 15, 1905 as the University’s 21st established Fraternity. The chapter house was at its present location on 2340 Piedmont Avenue. At the time, the chapter had 27 members, among which nine were distinguished faculty members. After World War I, the chapter temporarily moved to 2717 Haste Street, but moved back to its original location by 1923. The house thrived through World War II and the 1960’s, but with the student unrest and the anti-establishment Berkeley ideals, the chapter had to close its doors. Nine years later in 1979, the chapter re-colonized at Berkeley, growing over the course of 8 months. On March 30, 1980 the California Chapter was re-chartered and the chapter house was located at 2728 Haste Street. In 1993, the chapter learned its original location, 2340 Piedmont Avenue, was available. The chapter moved back to the original house where it was chartered 88 years previously. Since the move back to Piedmont, Acacia has been represented in several campus organizations such as the Inter-fraternity Council. Because of its achievements, the California Chapter of Acacia received the UC Berkeley Chancellor’s Award in 1997 and 1998 for overall excellence in the Greek Community. The chapter has also been recognized within our national organization, receiving the Malcolm Award for most outstanding Acacia Chapter and Chapter Excellence Awards at the 2000 and 2002 International Conclaves. Acacia has a long standing tradition of excellence and pride at the University of California.
